These houses represent a period of unprecedented building activity from 1878 to 1882. Consolidation of the rural sector at this time created a demand for manufactured goods and services, which in turn needed more labour and more housing to cater for it. Terraces such as these were common in Sydney and Melbourne, but not so much in Adelaide.

Terrace Houses at 355-367 Carrington Street, Adelaide
“The multi-storey terrace house was a form of high-density housing which provided mainly for the more affluent middle-classes a family residence conveniently located close to the office or place of business.” (Stefan Pikusa, The Adelaide House 1836 to 1901, 1986).

Significance
This terrace is distinguished from similar terraces by the use of individually hipped roofs to each unit. Architecturally the complex is not of great interest. It has been simply built and the original detailing has been altered, or is of only mediocre quality. However, the group is significant because of its comparative unity, scale and contribution to the street.
