South Australian Brewing Company -West End Brewery

These offices were built in 1940-41 as the administrative headquarters for the South Australian Brewing Company Limited. The building was designed by prominent Adelaide architect E. K. Milne and constructed by Wm. Essery & Sons. The work was undertaken during the war years and completed in 1941. S.H. Gilbert designed the extensions, which were carried out in 1956.

When the company consolidated its two production facilities on the Southwark site at Thebarton, and the demolished the West End Brewery on the southern side of Hindley Street, in 1982 and 1984, it sold the building. The Australian Institute of Management – South Australia bought it in 1984. It has since been used by The University of South Australia.

The building is an unusual rendering of the Georgian style, with strictly disciplined fenestration and crisply detailed dressings in what appears to be artificial stone. The design reflects the desire of architects during this period to interpret rather than copy stylistic details.

The interior of the brewery offices is notable for its originality and detailing, which includes panelling and metalwork.
