North Adelaide Police Station Building

North Adelaide Police Station Building

The police station with residence and lock-up was completed in 1864 at a cost of £385. The builder was J. Wheatley. In 1866 a tender for erecting a verandah was given to William Bundey.

The building replaced a former station in Kermode Street that was built in 1850. The new Archer Street station was built when there was an upsurge of such buildings throughout South Australia as an important development of the South Australian Police Force.

The station is a good example of its type, built of bluestone with a hipped slate roof, since replaced by corrugated galvanised-iron.
