House at 301-305 Ward Street, North Adelaide

The original section of this house, shown on the Smith Survey of 1880, lies at the rear of the present facade. The original rectangular building is one of North Adelaide’s early houses, dating from the mid-1850s. The present facade of one room in depth was erected in about 1909. In 1853 this eastern quarter of Town Acre 756 was sold to Jonathan Adam Erk for £150. This was in turn sold to Henry Gilbert for the same amount in 1854 when Gilbert took out a mortgage on the property with Erk. In 1857 the property was again sold, for £275, to Martin Nicholls. Judging by this and the type of construction, the house was probably built between 1854 and 1857 by Henry Gilbert.

The building is an example of the early Adelaide construction style and of piecemeal expansion. The earliest section is simply gabled with brick and limestone rubble walling, while the section fronting Ward Street and set on the footpath alignment is more elaborate, with a neatly arched porch to the main entrance and pert cast-iron gate. This front section is built of squared random coursed sandstone with brick dressings. The house is in largely original condition.

This house is historically significant for it's very early construction and the elements associated with that time, such as being aligned with the pavement.
